Unmanned IV.

This is coolbert:

We now come to the era of the modern unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV].

The UAV, an evolving concept that is in a constant state of R&D, development, deployment, etc.

The UAV as it is understood today began with the reconnaissance [recon] model first fielded by the Israeli.

The IAI Pioneer/Scout.

[Israel, as usual, is at the forefront of UAV development. Israel is a nation possessing some formidable capabilities with regard to weapons design. Has some first rate scientists in a variety of fields that allow it to develop state-of-the-art equipment that even major world powers [England, France, etc.] do not have!!]

The is STRICTLY a recon vehicle for visual surveillance through miniaturized electronics systems. Electro-optic [EO] technology available as a result of Moore’s Law. A TV camera onboard what is essentially a radio-controlled [RC] scale model aircraft. Providing real-time surveillance of the battlefield. Controlled by a data link in THE SAME FASHION AS WOULD BE A COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE RC MODEL KIT PLANE!! Obviously more robust, but still little more than a sophisticated RC model airplane.

"Initially deployed aboard battleships to provide gunnery spotting, its mission evolved into reconnaissance and surveillance . . . It flies with a gimbaled EO/IR sensor, relaying analog video in real time via a C-band line-of-sight (LOS) data link."

[you can see from the picture of the that the Scout is slightly larger than your normal RC model airplane. But NOT MUCH larger.]

The U.S, taking a cue from Israel, HAS ALSO developed it’s own version of the Scout. [the U.S. too flies the Scout]. This is the Raven.

[there is just a prodigious number of UAV being flown by U.S. forces and other militaries around the world. I use the Scout and the Raven as just examples of the EO type recon UAV.]

An even smaller UAV but having the same capability for real-time visual surveillance of the battlefield. Flown by a United States Air Force [USAF] enlisted man.

"Standard mission payloads include CCD color video and an infrared night-vision camera."

[this UAV LOOKS EXACTLY AS YOUR COMMERCIALLY OBTAINABLE RC MODEL KIT PLANE!! A recent TV ad for potential enlistees in the USAF shows an airman actually flying this “bird”!! YOU TOO CAN DO THIS!!]

UAV’s such as the Scout and the Raven allow the commander on the ground almost absolutely instantaneous real-time surveillance and intelligence that was once only available to the highest echelons of command.

Micro-electronics thanks to Moore’s Law in action!!
