Varus.

This is coolbert:

With regard to Martin van Creveld, the distinguished Israeli military historian, someone other than myself noticed the mistakes made by the Professor when he said, speaking about the current Iraq war, "the most foolish war since Emperor Augustus in 9 BC sent his legions into Germany and lost them".

See the wiki entry concerning van Creveld and his mispronouncements.

"an apparent reference to the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, which actually took place in 9 AD."

Seems van Creveld had the date wrong too. NOT 9 B.C. WAS 9 A.D.

I had blogged before concerning the Augustus gaffe. It WAS NOT Augustus that sent three Legions into Germany. It was Quintillius Varus, on his own volition.

As I said before, an expert should not be wrong about such things. OR, am I BEING TOO PEDANTIC HERE!!??

"pe·dan·tic - - overly concerned with minute details"

Have to watch myself too. I had the date as being 7 A.D. in my OWN BLOG ENTRY! OH, OH! Well, even the best of us!

According to JFC Fuller, Varus took command of legions already amongst the Germans. He did not send them, but accompanied them to their doom.
