This is coolbert:
Vanunu!
10. Just a few months ago, the Israeli Mordechai Vanunu was released from prison.
Served a sixteen year sentence, almost twelve of those being served in solitary confinement!!
It seems the crime committed by Mordechai was to defy the practice of sealed lips in Israel regarding nuclear weapons development.
At the time of Vanunu's arrest, in 1986, it seems nary a sole in all in Israel was willing to come forth and expound even in the slightest manner on Israeli nuclear capabilities. Even though it is possible Israel has been active in this area for three decades at the time.
Vanunu was and is indeed an odd bird. Or so it seems from what can be inferred from his reported behavior.
Is described as having worked as a nuclear technician at the Dimona facility.
Was described as being a "redundant" employee, and was let go with a $7,500 severance package.
Studied philosophy for a while after leaving employment at Dimona [now has a honorary doctorate??].
Was somewhat of a world traveler.
Became a Christian [comes from a Jewish religious family that his disowned him].
Was a member of the Israeli communist party.
This guy seems to have been all over the map.
And also seems to have a number of traits of the disaffected disgruntled ex-employee. Wants to make his prior employer look bad.
Vanunu did take a number of pictures from inside the Dimona facility prior to his dismissal.
And these pictures were shown to experts in the nuclear arena who were able to identify from the photos a facility that was deeply involved in nuclear weapons fabrication. And most surprising was photos of equipment that would lead one to believe that the Israelis have gone into the field of thermonuclear weaponry as well [H-bomb]. This was all quite a bombshell at the time.
Just before his interview with an English newspaper, where he was going to reveal all he knew about Israeli nuclear development, Vanunu was trapped by Israeli Secret Service agents, overpowered, drugged, and whisked back to Israel. Had a quick trial, a quick conviction, and an quick sentencing. Swift Israeli justice.
The regimen of imprisonment and solitary confinement was exceedingly harsh by Israeli standards. Vanunu remains, even after release, the ultimate pariah in the eye's of the Israeli public.
Such drastic measures by the Israeli government is a sure sign that something really big was going to be revealed by Vanunu.
Or so it would seem.
Something the Israelis are afraid to allow the world to know. But what and how could that be? This is all such a mystery? What is the Israeli afraid of? It is an open secret that Israel has the bomb. Or so it would seem. So then why such harsh and draconian treatment of Vanunu? Paranoia? Many aspects of this case are strange indeed:
"On February 5, 2004, former Mossad director Shabtai Shavit told Reuters that the option of killing Vanunu was considered in 1986 but 'Jews don't do that to other Jews'."
Israel does surely take it's security interests seriously, doesn't it??!!
