This entire “War on Terror”, anti-jihadi campaign has become a “political football” of the worse possible sort??!! An ambivalence over application of the FISA law is evidence of this being so? “Mickey Mouse” stuff that cannot be tolerated?
As I recall, this FISA law was written and passed during the late 1970’s. During the administration of President Carter.

Since that time, thirty years have passed, and the technology for international communications has changed markedly, and changed in a manner TOTALLY UNFORSEEN BY THE PERSONS THAT WROTE THE ORIGINAL FISA LAW!!!

C’mon Congress and whatever administration is in power. I cannot put it more simpler than this. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER AND DECIDE HOW TO HANDLE THIS SITUATION!!
DO NOT RELY UPON COURT DECISIONS AND PRECEDENT OR SUCH!! BITE THE BULLET AND DO WHAT YOUR ARE SUPPOSED TO DO!! AND DO SO SOON!!
DO NOT DEPRIVE OUR NATION OF A POTENTIALLY VALUABLE SOURCE OF INTELLIGENCE EVEN ONE DAY LONGER!!

A villainous enemy that IS NOT DETERRED IN THE ORDINARY SENSE FROM USING ATOMIC WEAPONS AS WOULD BE THE OLD SOVIET UNION. If we aren't looking at this at least, we are idiots. I can't imagine a better way to obtain data. It is like having 2 bugged phones at your disposal and a tap on the line.

Bert says: It is also important to remember that when you send a message via the internet it is NOT send as one discrete bundle of data to the recipient. The message is broken down into PACKETS and sent by potentially a NUMBER of various routes to the destination, all the packets being assembled at the far end. It IS impossible to ever determine what route is being taken, and if such route may travel through U.S. communications gear.

Bert says: You may also remember the incident where it was "found out" that the NSA had purchased phone records. Some thirty million of them. Possibly for data mining? This too created a brouhaha where none was warranted. In law school they actually discuss this very subject. Phone records are not guaranteed of privacy. This IS settled case law. A stink was made about something that everyone knows already is legal. An unwarranted political football.
