Unmanned IX.
This is coolbert:
This one thanks to "Wired News".
"Army Tests Fighting 'Bot'" [bot as in robot!!]
"'The U.S. Army will soon test a six-wheeled, 20-foot robot to see whether it can traverse rugged terrain, fire machine guns and carry 1,900 pounds of gear without soldiers remotely controlling its every move,' Defense News reports."
The idea that unmanned vehicles are useful is NOT confined to merely the air force. Ground components like this idea too!!
"Designed to fly on a Black Hawk, the [MULE] will carry two 7.62mm machine guns and two Javelin anti-tank missiles and feed camera data from its on-board sensors."
"The tough thing is making the robot smart enough -- and reliable enough -- to operate on its own, more or less."
This is to be AN AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE AS CONCEIVED!!
"The robots actually drove, and navigated, on their own"
Uses a GPS system for navigation.
Read it all. Unmanned NOT confined to just aerial vehicles.
And from a comment to the web site:
"And what will we do when SkyNet becomes self aware?"
"Posted by: Grandjester"
[SkyNetof course from the Arnold-what-is-his-last-name "Terminator" movie.]
Well, I don't think we are at the SkyNet phase yet?? At least I hope so!! SkyNet is fiction, RIGHT??!!

Maybe it would be good to send some robot vehicles mocking armored vehicles and convoy trucks, to trigger IEDS and roadside EFP's in Iraq, with troops behind them to control and react.
If they looked enough like the real ones, and could be loaded to weigh the same, and could have their steering taken over as needed, there might be lots fewer casualties.
Terrorists will not often stay around to observe whether they got real vehicles or fakey ones.
